Aerogels. What are they used for?

The main use of aerogels is for insulation products in industrial, space and construction sector. This market is growing rapidly. Sales in 2004 were $25 million and grew rapidly to $500 million by 2013.

Aerogels are used for a multitude of applications in addition to numerous insulation products. Some of the varied applications for aerogels include:
  • Chemical adsorbers
  • catalysts
  • thickening agents
  • sensors
  • electromagnetic shielding
  • fuel cells
  • supercapacitors
  • water purification

The light weight, tremendous strength, enormous surface area and porosity of aerogels endow them with characteristics that are impossible to attain in any other form.
