What is an Aerogel, Anyway?

An aerogel is the dry, porous, solid framework of a gel isolated from the gel’s liquid component.

Aerogels are porous and have air trapped inside the solid framework instead of a liquid.

The diameter of the pores range of 1 to 100 nanometers and are usually < 20 nm.

Gel = solid framework + liquid

Aerogel = solid framework + air

How do you remove the liquid without collapsing the solid framework? Supercritical CO2!

Visit the Applied Separations website to find out more about aerogel drying with supercritical CO2.
